Francis Dosne

FRANCIS DOSNE (pronounced Doane) was born in Troyes, France. In the forties he had the privilege of studying in Paris with Fernand Léger. Although he started painting at an early age, he turned out to be a sculptor and printmaker who has matured into an original artist with his own unique mastery of his two mediums.

Dosne studied at the Art Student League in New York, in the early sixties and eventually made the Sculpture Center School and Studios, where he was on the board of directors, his artistic home. In the eighties, he joined the studio of René Lavaggio to perfect his stone carving technique. He then carved local marble at the Dellatolas Marble Studio in Tinos, Greece. This extensive range of technical experience is especially evident in his marble sculptures where their sense of movement and their sensual formal grace carry the eye around the forms with a fluidity.

When carving stone Dosne feels that the material itself has an almost mystical ability to unearth its secrets and lets the natural forces inherent in the marble derive the final shape. His fascination with the play of light and shadows over concave and convex surfaces result in a contagious concern, as compelling to the viewer as to himself.

In the nineties, he joined the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop where he developed a similarly varied visual vocabulary of intaglio prints, where luminous color areas converge with graceful linear shapes to create free-floating compositions which are notable for their simple elegance.

Francis Dosne's art work is prominently displayed in various private collections in the United Sates and abroad.
